Abstract:
This presentation considers how 20th-century Chinese history connects to historical principles and practices emerging in earlier periods, some of which may prove significant in shaping possible futures that Chinese attempt to achieve. This brief review of patterns of historical change before the 20th century and their relevance to possible futures also places this temporal analysis within a larger spatial frame by moving beyond China to address Western political ideologies and governance institutions and the approaches to the future influenced by a different past using an empirical focus on environmental sustainability subjects.
