本演講旨在探討在1982-1983年的講課《管治自我與管治他者》和1983-1984年的講課《說真話的勇氣》裡，傅柯如何分析講真話(parrêsia)的行動與專制(tyrannie)的關連，並指出傅柯主張以講真話來重新界定哲學實踐，重新論述哲學史為主體的實踐與遏制講真話的各種力量周旋，由此展現出追求真理、政治行為和倫理關懷三者緊密地糾纏在一起，在特別著重知識論和形上學的現代哲學以外，開闢出另一種哲學實踐的形態。
