摘要:
根據耶穌會士巴多明於雍正八(1730)年寄往法蘭西學院的書簡,康熙二十六(1687)年宮廷中曾經發生過一件在學者指導下成功從象足找到象膽的軼聞,該學者並因此得到康熙皇帝破格的褒獎。對於從希臘時代就知道象無膽囊的西方人來說,這整件事荒謬無比,巴多明認為此例適足以說明中國思想缺乏科學性。本文分析此書簡揭示中國雖然缺乏如同時期西方對各種動物的系統性解剖,但在剖食動物之餘,也曾觀察其內臟的特徵,並試圖運用其解釋人體的理論框架尋求其中的意義、乃至於與天人合一之「理」連結。在此天地感應的前提下,象膽在四足間移動是合乎情理的。
