Abstract,
This talk will use diaries and letters from key figures including academics, political activists, and military figures to examine changing expectations of politics in China during the era of the Civil War (1946-9).  How did the use of ideological language change people’s thinking about politics?  Was emotional response an important part of shaping expectations at a time of war?  And how did economic uncertainty shape people’s understanding and emotions?   The discussion will bring social and cultural perspectives to issues that have been more usually examined through a more elite political lens.
