Self-introduction
Lin Man-houng has studied both Chinese modern history and Taiwan history. In comparison with other historians, she is particularly interested in the total historical study from the perspective of trade, money, and treaty. The issues she has dealt with include treaty ports and hinterland in both Chinese mainland and Taiwan in the late Qing period, Late Qing perceptions of opium and its domestic supply, the connection between Latin American Independence Movement and nineteenth-century China's holistic change through silver, Taiwanese merchants’ Asia-Pacific commercial network, and Taipei treaty and the Asia-Pacific World. Methodologically, she often conducts both quantitative and qualitative study. She applies multidisciplinary approach which combines history with economics, sociology, political science, geography, law, anthropology and psychology. For the space coverage, she often tries to combine the study of Chinese history or Taiwan history with the global history. For the time perception, she often tries to seek the continuity and change between tradition and modernity. Her research findings tend to be more interpretive and have more interaction with the society. Her research outcome has often been published in Chinese, English, and Japanese. While serving as a Professor in the History Department of the National Taiwan Normal University, she has supervised thirty-eight theses and thirteen of them have been published as books. After serving as Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica and Professor in NTNU for about twenty years, and one year visiting professorship in both Waseda University and Kyoto University in Japan, she served as the president of Academia Historica (State History Academy) of the Republic of China from May 20, 2008 to December 15, 2010. Since then, she has renewed the position as the Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica and Professor in NTNU. From 2015 onward, she also served as professor of the Humanities Lectureship jointly opened by Academia Sinica and Yangming Medical University. In 2015, she was awarded with the Academic Research Prize by the Ministry of Education. In 2016-2021, she obtianed extension appointment by Academia Sinica. In 2020, she was awarded as one of the distinguished alumnus of National Taiwan University.
