Abstract:
In the 1940s, to establish political control over Middle Jiangsu, CCP mobilized and recruited the cultured youth by offering them the party’s democratic education. Then, those educated activists were depolyed to challenge and reorganize local authorities with the techniques of democratic education they learnt from CCP. These techniques involved the sophisticated discipline of youth habitus, the revision of Yanan Rectification experience, the reconciliation of local educational ecology, and the innovative implication of Shanghai progressive culture. This regime building strategy required the controlled uncontrollability of youth radicalism, leading to the overpoliticization of education which reflected the common tension between democracy and liberty in the worldwide modern politics.
