Submission Guidelines

The
Bulletin of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica
is published on a quarterly basis. The editorial board welcomes submissions of the following types of unpublished manuscripts about modern Chinese history: research articles, research and discussion essays, and book reviews. The following guidelines are for authors who submit manuscripts written in English. For information about manuscripts written in Chinese, see the
Bulletin's
Style Guide(撰稿格式).
All submissions must be works of original scholarship that have not been submitted elsewhere for publication in substantially similar form. Violation of any of these conditions will lead to rejection.
All submissions are subject to blind peer review. Authors will be notified of the results of the review process.
The word count limits are as follows: 10,000 words (40 pages, double-spaced) for articles; 5,000 words (20 pages) for research and discussion essays; and 2,500 words (5 pages) for book reviews.
All submissions (except for book reviews) should include the following, in both English and Chinese: manuscript title, author's name and professional affiliation, abstract, and a list of 3-5 key words. English abstracts should not exceed 1 page, double-spaced. Chinese abstracts should not exceed 500 characters.
All authors should list their full names, addresses, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses on the first page of the manuscript.
All submissions must be prepared on the computer, using Microsoft Word. Please submit the manuscript in an attached file via email or through the online submission system.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint charts, tables, photographs, maps, etc. The Bulletin is not responsible for copyright violations.
Authors of accepted manuscripts for publication are requested to sign a Copyright License Agreement, in which the author grants the Bulletin and its authorized databases nonexclusive and royalty-free rights to use and reproduce the article.
All citations and bibliographic entries must be complete, following the humanities format as in
MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers
. Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji should be produced by computer. For Romanization, use Pinyin or Wade-Giles for Chinese; Hepburn or Nippon for Japanese.
All authors whose articles or research and discussion essays are published in the
Bulletin
will receive 2 copies of the issue their work appears in, as well as 30 offprints of their works. All authors whose book reviews are published in the
Bulletin
will receive 2 copies of the issue their work appears in.
